Inclining Dial

(letterpress print, brass findings, digital animation)

Inclining Dial is a volvelle with five rotating discs. The mechanism is informed by a long history of circular calculation devices and predictive objects. It is a mix of crystal ball, celestial map, and meteorological chart. The imprecise nature of the instrument recalls earlier times when natural phenomena were a mystery, and science and magic intertwined. Swirling lines suggests the nebulous future of our climate. Sliding rings shift the image, variables interacting in an infinite number of ways to make up the full image. The interactivity emphasizes the viewer’s own impact on the outcome.
